This summer, David Corenswet will join an impressive array of actors who have portrayed the “Man of Steel” since his U.S. introduction in Action Comics No. 1 in 1938. Yet Superman is so much more than a “strange visitor from another planet,” he is a cultural icon who emerged during the depths of the Great Depression to serve as a symbol of renewed confidence and hope in a struggling America. This class will explore the ubiquitous nature of Superman’s presence among us for the past 87 years, including comics, animation, radio, serials, television, theater, film, commercials, and webisodes.
