American Public Opinion and Voting Behavior

During this course, we will discuss contemporary issues in American politics. Specifically, we will explore the following topics: the economy, global climate warming, the Second Amendment and gun rights, immigration, the influence of the media, morality politics (LGBTQ issues, capital punishment, reproductive rights), sports culture, and election outcomes. Overall, we are concerned with (1) the public's perception of society's prevalent issues and (2) voting behavior among Americas. We will also discuss how misleading or incorrect information can influence public opinion and what can be done to prevent or impede the spread of misinformation. Reading materials will be provided via email.

In director John Houston's 1962 classic Western "The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance," one character utters the phrase, "...this sir is the West. When the legend becomes fact, print the legend." When it made Western movies and television series, Hollywood chose legend over fact. In this class we will examine the myths Hollywood told us about the West and discover the truth behind the myths and legends.

Great Decisions is a national discussion program created by the Foreign Policy Association. Each year eight timely topics are chosen for the creation of a short video and classroom discussion materials. Interested students will watch a topic video each week, followed by instructor-led discussion. The 2025 topics are American Foreign Policy at a Crossroads, U.S. Changing Leadership of the World Economy, U.S.-China Relations, India: Between China, the West, and the Global South, International Cooperation on Climate Change, The Future of NATO and European Security, AI and American National Security, American Foreign Policy in the Middle East: Taking Stock and Looking Ahead.

The hobby of amateur (or ham) radio is over 100 years old but, this pastime has evolved, not only keeping pace with the times but leading the way. Amateurs combine their radio hobby with many other activities like RVing, model building, travel, astronomy, hiking, camping, weather spotting, and more. This course will teach you what amateur radio has to offer and qualify you for your FCC amateur radio license. You do not have to be a geek or electronics nut to get the most from this course. We use both presentations and live demonstrations to get you started. Cross “Licensed Radio Amateur” off your bucket list. Here’s your chance to join the select 0.2% of Americans who are radio amateurs!

Beginning Bridge

This course will introduce the basic concepts of Contract Bridge: how to evaluate a hand, make a bid, defend, keep score, and play a hand. Bridge is an excellent way to keep your mind sharp. The required text is Audrey Grant's Bridge Basics ($12) and can be purchased through Amazon or Better World Books. We are located at 2436 Miracle Lane, Mishawaka IN 46545 in the Town & Country Shopping Center. Co-Instructor is Cappy Gagnon.

Continuing/Advanced Sign Language

Our class is aimed at students who have participated in 5 or more FLI or equivalent sign class semesters. We strive to 'Sign Like a Champion' with weekly receptive & expressive conversational practice. Instructor will share helpful ASL interpreting & grammar links to access online; students build confidence & fluency learning to sign a song/poem or short story. Syllabus detailing class activities & supplementary sign vocabulary worksheets will be shared at the first class. Supplies fee: $7.

Introduction to Physics

The course will start with a short introduction to calculus. We will then cover force, motion, work, energy, Kepler's Laws about planetary motion, and Newtonian gravity. We will cover temperature, the laws of thermodynamics, and the basics of the kinetic theory of ideal gases (including Avogadro's constant and the universal gas law). We will end with electricity and magnetism; and the beginning of quantum mechanics (including Planck's constant, the quantization of energy, and Bohr's model of the hydrogen atom). The course requirement is high school algebra, which we will review as needed.
