Exploring English Morphology

The objectives of this course are: to acquaint students with the wide variety of methods used in English to form words. To develop an appreciation of how prefixes, roots and suffixes (morphemes) come together to create meaning. To teach the specific meanings of the most common morphemes in general use. To develop skill in using morphologic analysis in understanding, learning, and effectively using vocabulary. Continuing American Mah Jongg

Have you taken the Beginning American Mah Jongg class and want more opportunity to play with guidance? Would you like help in seeing where your tiles are leading you? Have you been playing for a while but want to improve your game? We will spend most of every in-person session playing mah jongg, with occasional short lessons on areas of interest. This class will also include weekly videos of the instructor playing on a mah jongg website and narrating what she’s doing and showing the process of moving toward a hand. The Art of Photography - Taking Great Pictures!

This is not a class on technologies & apps. for picture manipulation and editing. Rather, it’s all about Taking Great Pictures. What makes a good picture? Why are some pictures bland and others of the same subject more appealing? What catches our eye? Students will learn about and experiment with composition, framing, perspective, light & shadow, contrast and other elements of picture-taking through instruction and assignments, followed by sharing & critiquing pictures they have taken. They will also develop new ways of looking at the world around them. Digital cameras and cell-phone cameras are both fine.
Beginning Sign Language

Our class is for individuals who have no, or very limited experience with sign language and fingerspelling. We learn new sign vocabulary each week with frequent review and practice. Learn to incorporate facial expression & eye gaze and how hearing loss in any age group greatly affects communication, mood, & social skills. Text: Signing for Kids (and Adults!) by M. Man of Steel: A Superman History

This summer, David Corenswet will join an impressive array of actors who have portrayed the “Man of Steel” since his U.S. introduction in Action Comics No. 1 in 1938. Yet Superman is so much more than a “strange visitor from another planet,” he is a cultural icon who emerged during the depths of the Great Depression to serve as a symbol of renewed confidence and hope in a struggling America. This class will explore the ubiquitous nature of Superman’s presence among us for the past 87 years, including comics, animation, radio, serials, television, theater, film, commercials, and webisodes.
Beginning Watercolor

This class is for anyone who wishes to learn basic watercolor techniques. Whether you already have watercolor experience or have never picked up a paintbrush before, this class offers a fun and supportive environment through a variety of projects. Snapshot of Budapest, Hungary

This course will explore the beautiful Budapest! We will explore some of the history, architecture, culture, traditions and of course, food of Budapest and Hungary. There are so many amazing things to see and experience in Budapest. I will introduce basic vocabulary for anyone interested in travelling to Budapest or Hungary in general. I will put a booklet together for students taking this class of the topics we are discussing and resources that may be helpful. There will be a $5.00 copying fee.

iPad Photo Editing Workshop
with Richard Sunshine, Ph.D.
This workshop will use an app with a bit of Artificial Intelligence (AI) on the iPad to edit class and student photos. We will cover restoring old photographs, as well as removing unwanted people and features, adding images, adding text, changing background, and adjusting the exposure, texture, and color in selected areas of photos. In addition, we will briefly look at apps for creating ink drawings, cartoons, and stickers from photos, creating collages, and using new “Generative” AI for editing photos. An iPad running iPadOS 18 is required. A copy fee of $5.00 is due to the instructor at the first class. Jane Keller will be co-teaching.
